Celebrating Dr. King's Legacy

On this MLK Day, 821 wishes to celebrate the full legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr as an American hero who advocated for deep systemic change.

Dr. King's vision for America went beyond the points outlined in his powerful 1963 “I Have A Dream” speech. He was against the institution of war and colonialism. He was a vocal advocate for solutions that empowered the impoverished such as a redistribution of wealth. Dr. King was also committed to the intersection of peace and justice. In his own words, “true peace is not merely the absence of tension: it is also the presence of justice.”

If we wish to celebrate and honor his legacy, we must all be committed to more than just maintaining peace. We must all be dedicated to securing justice for the most marginalized and vulnerable in our country and across the world.
